Unreported news from European Council: poll initiated for dullest town name

Which town is next in line?

The discussions that were held during last week’s European Council have been widely reported by the mainstream press but the BJ reporters were able to get their hands on a letter sent from the office of President Van Rompuy asking the Heads of State and Government to decide in which town any change of Treaty would be decided on and signed.

The letter seen by the BJ states that:

“In light of the discussions to possibly make changes to the Lisbon Treaty, we ask the Member States to propose the next location for additional Treaty changes. Following internal discussions, we believe the following parameters must be taken into account (and justified) when putting forward a name:

1. Brussels is not an option as (1) we would not like to call a Treaty aftera location that could end up switching from being a city to a country (2) if the Treaty fails, Brussels’ frail reputation could end up being damaged even more.
2. No more Dutch cities. We apologise to the Netherlands but they have had their fair share of treaties named in accordance to their cities and we have been warned by several Member States that this would be deemed unacceptable.
3. No cities that sound like holiday resorts or places where no serious work ever gets done, such as Lisbon: experience has shown that selling Treaties is a hard job so we need to tackle the next one in branding-aware manner. In these times of austerity, we strongly advise locations that sound both dull and serious, such as Düsseldorf.
   
4. Should they even dare think of it, we warn the Austrians that the city of Fucking has no chance of ever being considered. There will be no Fucking Treaty in Europe in the near future!“
