European Commission’s External Action Service approved by Council amidst protest

The European Commission’s so-called Diplomacy Services, or EEAS for European External Action Service, has been approved by the Council yesterday, amidst quite some rumblings from different sides of the EU bubble.

But not everyone rejoices, far from it, as the BJ reporters discovered when talking to various people around the Berlaymont area.

A civil servant wishing to remain anonymous (which he told us he did extremely well in the corridors of the Commission where he was still called “Robert” even though his real name is Zoltan) confided: “this whole thing is outrageous. We know very well what the message to everyone outside the EEAS is: they’re all about action, and you’re about inaction. It’s a slap in our face, I tell you, to throw such truths at us!”

It seems that in order to attract bright young people to Brussels, a planned campaign has been unofficially circulating in national ministries across the EU, with the slogan “Bored? Get a piece of Action and join Cathy’s troops in Brussels!”

But this was not the only criticism voiced to us by officials. “It’s like their the men from AUNTIE”, said one elderly gentleman to us, explaining that this referred to “Ambitious Undercutters Nicking Those In EUslavery”…

Well, at the BJ we are merely disappointed that our repeated suggestions to the Commission to have a more attractive and representative name for the top EU diplomats than EEAS was not taken up more seriously: after all, you have to admit that working for DG BEACH sounds a lot more fun!

  1. The new service is occasionally referred to in-house as the External Entertainment Service. That’s not bad either, I would say! :-)

  2. And what would DG BEACH stand for exactly? :-)
