Something fishy?

The European Commission website CORDIS has reported that a Study published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment finds 25% of fish on sale in Ireland are mislabelled, other types of fish being sold as cod or haddock. Similar results were previously uncovered in a similar study conducted by a team from the University of California, San Diego in the US. Scientists there used the same approach to identify fish served in New York restaurants. They too discovered that 25% of the fish were mislabelled.

Asked for a reaction, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki refused to comment. But the BJ was told by sources close to the Commissioner that she had shrugged the results off, stating: “So fish are mislabelled and sold for something they are not…I sit in a College of Commissioners every Wednesday and have to do my thing on a regular basis in the European Parliament.. and I can tell you this: let’s hope no one conducts a similar study on politicians in Brussels because 25% of mislabelling would be exceeded by far!”.
