European Commission prohibits staff from going to certain Brussels areas

EuroDisney's online recruitment site

An internal email by the HR department of the European Commission was leaked today. In this message, severe penalties are outlined as regards “inappropriate behaviour, including expressing a will to impersonate or associate oneself with a cartoon or other fictional character” or “being spotted on a Friday at the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée or the Academix school in Brussels”.

The reason behind this thinly veiled threat is fear. Not fear for the safety of the Eurocrats (chances of being mugged in a Museum are after all slim…unless you look like a painting and the museum is in Paris) but fear for a massive brain drain. For since Wednesday this week, flyers can be found everywhere in Brussels announcing a massive recruitment operation by EuroDisney in Brussels today (see report by 7s7, in french). 2.000 job openings need to be filled and with the chances of success of Euroland seeming slim, many Commission officials could be tempted by the splendor and glitter of Disney’s magic castle, as a trade off for their own ivory tower. It seems that aside from the written warning, Commissioner Malmström, known for her interest in blocking Internet websites, may have asked internally to look at the possibilities for blocking Disney’s specific recruitment site for this event. It seems her staff answered that such measures are nice to create a buzz but frankly worthless in practice, an evaluation which led her to abandon the plan.
