Austrian Fucking inhabitants seize ECJ

The fact that a town called Fucking exists in Austria is probably as well known than the fact that Bavaria, Germany, has its Kissing and Petting towns.

Though the inhabitants of Fucking (and we are not sure if one should call them Fuckingers or something else) are proud of their small village – having rejected a referendum that proposed to change the name in 2004 – irritation and frustration have grown as the town signs of the village have been stolen over a dozen times, probably by memorabilia collectors, and as one of the inhabitants was bullied into abandonning his lucrative website that sold T-shirts and other merchandising marked “I love Fucking in Austria”.

But now, the town’s patience has definitely vanished, as a German brewery was successful in overturning a 2009 decision by the European Union’s OHIM trade marks agency that had prohibited the marketing of a beer called “Fucking Hell”. According to the court ruling dated 26 March 2010, the brewery now has the permission to market the beer, the court having accepted their claim that the beer is actually named after the village Fucking and the German term for pale lager, hell.

The mayor of Fucking considers this ruling unacceptable and has seized the European Court of Justice (ECJ) requesting that either, the brewery’s “Fucking Hell” be produced in his town, hence benefitting to the economy of the locals, or that Fucking Hell not be authorised. It is unclear at this stage if his action is supported by the mayors of the neighbouring towns Unterfucking (Lower Fucking) and Oberfucking (Upper Fucking)

However, in light of this development, the mayor of Dildo, Newfoundland issued a press release in which he warned all entrepreneurial spirits considering the side-benefits of using his town’s name that they would “see Fucking Hell if they even thought of using Dildo”.
